Who is Seo?

Someone said you need “Seo”.  Huh?  Seo who?

Or maybe you just heard the term and figured it’s just some technical jargon you don’t need?

Actually it’s S E O
the abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization.

Still sounds techie and not your thing? Well, if you’re a business owner and you want your business to succeed in this 21st century, you need to have at least an understanding of it is and what it means to YOU!

You see, once upon a time… people could find businesses like yours through something called the “Yellow Pages”.

let your fingers do the walking?

Yep, the good old days… If you wanted to stand out and gain more customers, just place a bigger ad!
Well, when was the last time you looked in the yellow pages? If you’re like most folks, chances are you haven’t peaked inside a yellow pages for years… Nope, instead your fingers do the walking on your computer keyboard or smart phone!

Nowadays, nearly 80% of the entire population has a smart phone. And 97% of consumers use the internet to find local businesses.

So, perhaps you’re now saying, “Yep, and I have a website for my business.” Great!  But now, how are people FINDING your website?

Just Google It!

So how do you get on Google (and other search boxes)?  Well, Google sends out “bots” that scour the internet in search of content. The good news is that, unless you specifically tell those bots not to look at your site, they WILL find you and list you on their site! Woohoo!

But wait… You just got listed on page 998 of the search results. Ugh. You see, Google only puts the 10 “most relevant” results on their first page, along with perhaps some advertisers and a section with a map and  3 relevant local results.  (That map section is generally referred to as the “Google My Business” section.) Worse yet, your potential customers will look a the first few results on this page, maybe all of them. But few will click actually bother to flip through to page 2, even less to page 3, and well… you get the drift.

So, is your listing buried in “never never will be found land“? Not so good if you want anyone to see it!

And so the ultimate question… how do you get your website listed on that first page? THAT, my friend, is what “SEO” is all about.

Now SEO used to be as simple as loading up your website with hidden keywords and other “tricks”. Ah, the “good ol’ days!”  Unfortunately with billions of sites out there, that “technique” no longer works. Instead, you now have to actually be, yes, “relevant”. Google wants to know you are providing information relevant to your type of business (and location) and even better yet that others are seeking you out through social media, links and and more.

Sorry, I can’t sugar coat this… it ain’t easy, and it’s not an overnight process. Even for experts at SEO, getting a site moved up in the rankings take time generally months to prove you are “relevant” and gradually move up.  But the sooner you start and the better you do it, the sooner your site will get noticed, and the sooner new customers will be frequenting your business.  And THAT’S what it’s all about… Getting YOU MORE CUSTOMERS!
